New State of the Art Facility Boosts Cancer Research at University of Edinburgh

Robertson Construction Central East has successfully completed the construction of a new £12m 4D Cellular Medicine Building for the University of Edinburgh’s Institute of Genetics and Cancer (IGC). Procured through our Major Projects Framework, the new facility will support vital cancer and health research.

A Seamless Integration

Carefully designed to complement the existing IGC buildings, the new five-storey structure seamlessly integrates with the campus. To achieve this, Robertson went to extraordinary lengths, including custom building bricks to match the unique design of the original building. The new space houses cutting edge laboratories, data analysis areas, and other specialist facilities, providing researchers with the ideal environment to make groundbreaking discoveries.

Minimising Disruption

Delivering a project of this scale within a live campus environment presented significant challenges. However, Robertson successfully minimised disruption to staff and students throughout the construction process.

Boosting Medical Research

David Cairns, Regional Managing Director at Robertson Construction Central East, expressed his pride in delivering this project, highlighting its contribution to the University's groundbreaking research. The company's strong relationship with the University, with this being their 14th completed project, underscores their commitment to supporting world-class research facilities.

Professor Wendy Bickmore, Director of the MRC Human Genetics Unit, emphasised the importance of the new building in bringing together the IGC’s three centres to accelerate scientific discovery and translate research into tangible benefits for society.
